P54 – Exercise Getting Tone And Depth In Detail

OCA-IMG_8572This is probably the exercise where I felt things started to slip away.

“… using pencils and hatching and cross-hatching techniques …” Why are pencils used for drawings? Because they can easily be used for shading. When are hatching techniques used? When you are using a drawing implement which cannot shade such as a pen. I would have been happy drawing this piece of grainy, knobbly wood in pencil with shading or in ink with cross-hatching but pencil and hatching … ?
