P128 Project: Self portrait – Exercise: Portrait from memory

This is a portrait of the Management to whom I have been married for forty years. I do not like drawing from memory. I find it very difficult. I much prefer to drawing what is in front of me.

Check and Log:

Which drawing materials produced the best results? Why?
Charcoal or soft graphite pencil as it is straight forward to shade to give tone and form.

Does your self portrait look like you?
I think it does although I’m not 100% happy around the mouth and chin. This is partially due to the fact that my facial hair needs a trim. My mouth is almost hidden by my moustache and the bulk of my beard makes me look a bit like Homer Simpson! The Management also thinks it looks like me, but her reservation is about the darkness of the left eye.

Did you find it easy to convert your sketches into a portrait? Were your preliminary drawings adequate?
No and irrelevant. Practice sketches of eyes would have been far more useful.
