P130 Assignment Four – 2 Tone

Pose your model in a reclining pose … Use strong lighting from one major light source … Focus on tone and explore the subject’s pictorial possibilities.

I tried a number of poses based on famous paintings including Ingres’ Grande Odalisque:

I wasn’t happy with this pose and the opportunity that the shadows gave for tonal work so I tried a pose based on Boucher’s Portrait of Marie-Louise O’Murphy:

This just looked wrong. Sandra’s left leg did sink a little into the chaise longue but it just wasn’t right. In addition, Sandra found the pose very uncomfortable.

I therefore settled on a pose based on Manet’s Olympia.
