P159 Exercise: Finding the View

You need to explore the place that interests you. Take your sketchbook and camera with you and make notes as you look round. … Anticipate how the light will change. … Make quick sketches in pencil and notes on aspects of your location that you are interested in.

Only one edge of the Imperial War Museum North was vertical! All of these sketches were done with a soft 3B pencil. They were drawn in an A3 sketchbook which has meant that they have had to be photographed, rather than scanned, resulting in the grey background.

AIMG_2517The entrance to the Lowry from the right hand side. Most of the surfaces are clad in metal panels which produce interesting reflections. The lack of horizontals even extended to the sloping floor of the cafe.

The straight lines of this building, part of the Media City complex, made an interesting change, but the perspective was challenging. Most of the windows were blue.

AIMG_2519I liked this view of the entrance to the Lowry from the left hand side and it may be suitable for the final assignment piece.
